Mass Effect Wednesday 21 September, 2011

I’ve only ever completed three video games…and one of those was a Zelda game! The other two were both Mass Effect games! That’s quite a statement is it not?

Mass Effect has quite off-putting cover art work.  The synopsis is also somewhat ‘heard it all before’ with it’s “an ancient threat returns. One final hope emerges” and  “lead an elite squad on a heroic, action-packed adventure throughout the galaxy”.  Even the screenshots on the back of the case made me feel that I really did not want to play this game.  The guy in the shop who was recommending it to me seemed ever so earnest whilst espousing the virtues of it but I still felt underwhelmed.  I’m not sure what finally persuaded me to buy it that day.  Perhaps it was the eight pound price tag or maybe it was that I didn’t want to make this earnest young chap feel that he’d wasted his eulogising.  Whatever it was it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Mass Effect is like the best science fiction film you’ve ever played.  It has an exceptional plot, you get to make choices (that actually make a difference to the outcome of this game and the subsequent titles).  It plunges you into a beautifully designed and amazingly realised world.  As if that wasn’t enough the music is fantastic too, more than a match for most of the great science fiction soundtracks.

This game is an action RPG like none you’ve ver played. The combat is fierce and the role playing elements are just deep enough. The cinematic cut scenes are astounding and the intuitive dialogue wheel is fantastic.  The action sequences are mainly third person shooter style but even if you’re not a fan of that type of game it is very enjoyable.

You can probably pick this game up for very little money and it would be worth much more than every penny spent.

Yeah, I STILL haven’t gotten around to finishing half the games on my list so I think I’ll leave these two til a far future date. Though I’m sure they are amazing. I will stick my oar in and recommend The Witcher as it was one hell of a fun ride.

So, Mass Effect 3 polished off as well?

Nope not yet. I bought it when it came out but it is really difficult and I am quite rubbish at games! I reckon I’m about a third of the way through. Might go back to it this week.
