MADVILLAINY: MADVILLAIN Monday 17 October, 2011

MF Doom + Madlib = Madvillain. Better go get it!

If you know anything about hip hop you’re already in love with MF Doom. You will also no doubt be in love with Madlib.  Therefore you will be dashing to jump headlong into Madvillainy, their first joint output if you haven’t already that is!

This is album is a triumph of hip hop. I must have listened to it hundreds of times and it still feels like a new album.  It’s such a dense album that I never really feel like I’m getting a handle on what’s going on.  The average track length is around two and a half minutes which only adds to the disorientation.  That makes it sound unpleasantly pop but this is an album that I happily get lost in again and again.

Madlib’s strange production perfectly complements MF Doom’s growly, laconic delivery. The hooks and riffs on this album have been pilfered from a wide, weird and wonderful array of music and it adds to the magical feel. I think that magical is a good way to describe the sound of this album.  It feels a little bit like we are traversing into some sonic-jewel encrusted, cavernous labrynth.  Holding court at the centre of the labrynth is a fifty foot tall MF Doom mumbling out exquisitely crafted rhymes.

I love this album so much that I bought the instrumental version and the Madlib remix album both of which are amazing as well.  You don’t need to worry about those just yet just make sure you get Madvillainy and it will all be ok.
